Customs Officer Found Dead in Katsina Hotel Under Mysterious Circumstances

A troubling incident has occurred in Katsina State, Nigeria, where a serving customs officer, Assistant Superintendent of Customs (ASC) Lawal Tukur, was found dead in a hotel room under circumstances that remain unclear and under investigation.

Discovery of the Body

On October 15, 2025, at the Murjani Hotel in Katsina metropolis, hotel staff discovered the lifeless body of ASC Lawal Tukur around 8:30 a.m. in one of the rooms. Tukur had lodged there overnight under unusual conditions he was with three women.

Inside the room, the hotel staff found empty sachets of suspected substances in the wastebasket. What contents those sachets held has not been officially confirmed, and authorities have not yet disclosed toxicology results.

The Women Present

The three women reportedly present with ASC Lawal Tukur have been identified as:

  • Khadija Ali, age 34, of Dutsin Amare Quarters, Katsina

  • Aisha Lawal, age 30, of Ingawa Local Government Area, Katsina State

  •  Hafsat Yusuf, age 22, of Brigade Quarters, Kano State

Reports state that Khadija and Aisha spent the night with the deceased, while Hafsat arrived later and also lodged in the hotel.

Aftermath & Official Response

Upon discovering Lawal Tukur’s body, hotel staff alerted local authorities, and the body was transported to Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Katsina, where a medical doctor confirmed the death. The body was deposited in the mortuary as an autopsy was ordered to determine the cause of death.

The Katsina State Command of the Nigeria Customs Service acknowledged Tukur’s death. However, the command has not yet been able to confirm if the death occurred in the hotel room. In statements, the service said the family informed them of the officer’s passing, but details of the cause remain unknown.

Burial and Public Reaction

Following customary rites, Lawal Tukur was buried according to Islamic tradition. For example, several news outlets reported that the funeral prayer was performed at his family house in Sabon Layi, near the Katsina Police Compound.

Meanwhile, many questions remain unanswered. Specifically, authorities are interested in whether the substances found in the room played a role in his death, whether there was foul play, or whether natural causes might have been involved. Hotel management, staff, and the three women presents were questioned, but no clear cause has yet been confirmed.

Official statements have been cautious. The Nigeria Customs Service, through its Katsina command, confirmed the officer’s passing but declined to provide details regarding how, where, or under what circumstances he died. The spokesperson, Isah Bello, said that while the service is aware of the reports, they are still awaiting reliable information before making firmer public conclusions.

Likewise, law enforcement and medical authorities have not yet released the autopsy results. The presence of suspected substances in empty sachets suggests possible drug involvement, but with no toxicology report or evidence of external trauma, all possibilities—from overdose to sudden illness—remain open.

Broader Implications

This event has drawn attention not just because it involves a public service officer and a dramatic scene but also because it raises larger questions about safety, accountability, and the protocols for investigating unexpected deaths. The circumstances—hotel lodging, presence of multiple individuals, and suspected substances—highlight the importance of proper forensic work, transparent communication from authorities, and responsible media coverage.

Many citizens and media outlets are calling for a full, transparent investigation so that all those involved—hotel staff, the hotel management, witnesses, medical experts—are heard, and so that any misreporting or rumors are clarified. The deceased’s family, local community leaders, and colleagues are also seeking closure and accurate information.

In summary:

  • ASC Lawal Tukur was found dead early morning on October 15, 2025, in Murjani Hotel, Katsina. He was discovered with three women, and empty sachets of suspected substances were found in the room.
